Usability: Train Cabin Door not Closable

21. 8. 2008 · Kategorie: Usability

One year ago I wrote an article about the “Deutsche Bahn” cabin door, which is not usable. (see http://www.cmenschel.de/?p=27). I have seen passengers, who couldn’t open the cabin door. The door handle implies a simple slidable door. But passengers can’t open the door  by using the handle. A button on the handle has to be pushed to open the door. Of course passengers didn’t know about that and therefore couldn’t leave the train without my help.

Yesterday I have seen something new in the “Deutsche Bahn” train cabin: An automatic door, which is slidable by pushing the door handle. No button needs to be pushed. Passengers can use the door as normal. Everything seems to be fine and familiar. Passengers can open the door and therefore leave the train. However it is not:  Because closing the door is a big drawback. The door closes automatically and blocks all manual close efforts . I know that lots of passengers tend to forget to shut the door. But some do not. Therefore the door is not closeable, which is a simple and usual task.

I have seen two strong men, who tried to close the door. The guys had been pushing and pulling the door for 2 minutes. They had no luck, couldn’t the close the door and finally gave up. A couple seconds later the door closed itself automatically.

Unfortunately I have no picture of the door.

      Hallo,
